Do you know how to use suitable PV panels and batteries to make the street lights last long enough? Let us tell you the way of calculation to decide more accurate specifications you need for your projects.

Now we just want to show you how to choose appropriate PV panel and battery to light up the fixture long enough. Let’s do some presettings:

Note: we suggest the voltage of system is 12v when the lighting fixture is under 40w, if It’s equivalent to 40w or over 40w, the voltage is 24v

ExampleⅠ:

﹒Power of LED fixture(P):30w

﹒Effective sunshine each day(H): 4 hours, you can check this value for project’s location.

﹒Lighting time every night(h):10 hours

﹒Lighting mode:

first 3 hours 100% power, middle 3 hours 70% power, last 4 hours 30% power.

So it makes total 6.3hours 100% power output.

﹒last 3 overcast days

P=IU

30w=I*12V,  I=30/12=2.5A

Acid/gel battery =(2.5a*6.3hours*3days)/0.7(preserved battery capacity)*1.2(wastage)=81Ah

Lithium battery =(2.5a*6.3hours*3days)/0.9(preserved battery capacity)*1.2(wastage)=63Ah

PV panel=30w/18V*6.3h*18V/4H*1.3(wastage)=62W

So, for 30w system, we just need to use 1pc 81Ah/12V acid battery or 1pc 63Ah/12V lithium battery and 1pc 62W/18V PV panel to achieve good lighting effect. We usually choose 90Ah acid/gel battery/70Ah lithium battery and 70w PV panel.

 

Example Ⅱ(apply to single arm or double arms street lights)

﹒Power of LED fixture(P):80w(1pc 80w fixture or 2pcs 40w fixtures)

﹒Effective sunshine each day(H): 4 hours

﹒Lighting time every night(h):10 hours

﹒Lighting mode:

first 3 hours 100% power, middle 3 hours 70% power, last 4 hours 30% power.

So it makes total 6.3hours 100% power output.

80w=I*24V,  I=80/24=3.3A

Acid/gel battery =(3.3a*6.3hours*3days)/0.7(preserved battery capacity)*1.2(wastage)=107Ah

Lithium battery =(3.3a*6.3hours*3days)/0.9(preserved battery capacity)*1.2(wastage)=84Ah

PV panel=80w/36V*6.3h*36V/4H*1.3 (wastage)=164W

So, for 80w system, we just need to use 2pc 107Ah/12V acid/gel battery or 2pc 84Ah/12V or 1pc 84Ah/24V lithium battery and 2pc 170W/18V or 1pc 170W/36V PV panel to achieve good lighting effect. We usually choose 110Ah acid/gel battery/90Ah lithium battery and 170w PV panel.
